Secret Service Director to Testify Before House

(RepublicanDaily.org) – Kimberly Cheatle, the director of the U.S. Secret Service, is set to appear before a Republican-led congressional committee that is attempting to look into the failed assassination attempt against former president Donald Trump.

A spokesperson for the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, which is led by Republican Kentucky Representative James Comer, said that the committee plans to subpoena the Secret Service director. The committee is reportedly launching an investigative hearing entitled “Oversight of the U.S. Secret Service and the Attempted Assassination of President Donald J. Trump.”

The former chief executive narrowly avoided the assassin’s bullet after he reportedly coincidentally moved his head a fraction just moments after the shot was fired, causing the bullet to just graze his ear. One of his supporters, however, was not so fortunate – 50-year-old former firefighter Corey Comperatore became the lone fatality in the incident after he shielded his family from bullets.

Two others, 57-year-old David Dutch and 74-year-old James Copenhaver, were critically injured and were rushed to the hospital and are reportedly still in a critical but stable condition. A GoFundMe fundraising campaign has been raised for the victims and has accumulated more than $5 million in contributions as of press time. Another separate GoFundMe campaign for the Comperatore family has gathered more than $1 million in donations.

The killer, an apparently disturbed 20-year-old named Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by law enforcement within seconds after he fired off the shots intended to kill Trump.

In a statement, Representative Comer said that the Secret Service not only botched its “no-fail mission” but also managed to allow a civilian to die and two others to suffer serious injuries.

“Questions remain about how a rooftop within proximity to President Trump was left unsecure,” Comer said, adding that Cheatle had a responsibility to be accountable to the American public regarding the Secret Service’s “security lapses” that allowed the attempted murder to take place.
