(RepublicanDaily.org) – President Joe Biden had only nice things to say about Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle after the latter’s announcement that she would be stepping down from her post on the heels of the failed assassination attempt against former president Donald Trump.
In a statement shortly after news broke that Cheatle was resigning, Biden called the now-former Secret Service Director a person with “honor, courage, and incredible integrity” for taking responsibility for the agency, which Biden said was assigned with the most difficult jobs in public service.
Biden, who also recently announced that he would be abandoning his presidential campaign and support Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic presidential nominee instead, said that, “We all know what happened that day [failed attempt on Trump’s life] can never happen again.” The president also promised to appoint a successor in the near future. For now, Secret Service Deputy Director Ronald Rowe will be holding the post of acting director on orders from Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Following the failed shooting of the former chief executive, which claimed the life of one attendee – a former firefighter and father of two girls – and critically wounded two others, there have been mounting calls for Cheatle to resign. Observers and security experts pointed out the numerous security lapses that enabled the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, to perch on the rooftop of a structure facing the stage where Trump was speaking and take his deadly shots. A law enforcement sniper was able to shoot Crooks in the head, stopping his shooting spree short and preventing more victims. Trump sustained a wound to his ear from the missed shot.
In an email sent to staff, Cheatle said that she is taking responsibility for the lapses at the Trump rally In her resignation letter, she said that while she continues to be loyal and supportive of the organization, she was resigning to help prevent “distractions” that take away from the profound and important work the agency does every day.
