Russia Opposition Leader’s Body Found Bruised in a Morgue

( – The remains of Alexei Navalny have been found in a hospital morgue in the Arctic with reports indicating that the body sports a number of bruises.

A paramedic who claims to work for the morgue told a European news outlet that the bruising appears to be consistent with seizures as well as attempts to administer CPR. Russian authorities say that Navalny died from “sudden death syndrome” and that multiple attempts were made to resituate him to no avail.

Navalny, who leads the opposition against Russia’s strongman president Vladimir Putin, was said to have suddenly collapsed after a talking a walk in the grounds of Russia’s IK-3 penal colony in the arctic. The IK-3 is nicknamed the “Polar Wolf” and is considered to be one of the country’s harshest prisons, a successor to the infamous labor camps utilized by the old Soviet Union.

The Russian opposition leader was in the prison serving a sentence that amounted to a total of 30 years over a variety of charges that included extremism and embezzlement. Navalny’s camp has long called the charges fabricated and trumped-up, given President Putin’s penchant for throwing dissenters and political opponents in jail, if not just dispatching them outright. Navalny has repeated been a victim of physical attacks, and even in one instance, a failed assassination attempt that utilized a toxin also utilized by KGB intelligence agents of the old Soviet regime.

Before his death, Navalny complained of headaches as well as frequent abdominal pain, leading some to speculate that he was being slowly poisoned through his prison food. Russian authorities have denied committing any wrongdoing. Some world leaders, including President Joe Biden, as well as members of Navalny’s team, have said outright that “Putin and his thugs” had something to do with the opposition leader’s death. Anthony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State said that Navalny’s death is simply a testament to the “weakness and rot” that lies at the center of the Putin administration.
