(RepublicanDaily.org) – Former president Donald Trump has finally revealed his pick for the vice president position – Republican Ohio Senator J.D. Vance.
On a post on his self-owned social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said the decision comes after a long period of deliberation where he considered the merits of other potential candidates.
The former chief executive’s announcement coincided with the opening day of the Republican National Convention. Sources inside the campaign say the Vance also previously secured the approval of conservative news commentator Tucker Carlson and even Donald Trump Jr. Carlson and Trump Jr. even reportedly argued that despite Vance’s history of criticizing Trump in the past, he would likely be the most loyal, compared to the then-other potential running mates that included Republican Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Republican North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum.
Sources within the Trump campaign also say that the selection of Vance made sense – the senator’s working-class roots in Ohio’s belt would make him a relatable figure for many voters, especially those who continue to be undecided and those in swing states. In addition, Vance’s wife, Usha Chilukuri, a practicing Hindu and the daughter of immigrants from India, would help pull in more minority votes. All in all, proponents of Vance’s selection say that he could potentially expand the Republican party’s voting base, an especially important factor given how close many expect the upcoming presidential elections to be.
Vance was not always in Trump’s camp, however. The former venture capitalist, who also authored a best-selling memoir entitled “Hillbilly Elegy”, was one of the most prominent and vocal members of the “Never Trump” faction of the GOP in 2016, and has repeatedly criticized the former commander-in-chief in public since. However, he received Trump’s endorsement when he ran for the Senate in 2022, following multiple meetings with the former chief executive where he reportedly expressed a desire to hold a larger role within the GOP.
