Ellen DeGeneres says that she is putting a hard stop on her showbiz career after she concludes her Netflix special.
The LGBTQ+ activist and comedian is currently on a standup comedy tour, a farewell comedy tour entitled “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up,” saying that she intends to make a complete break from show business once she is done with her current professional commitments.
In a Q&A session with audience members – which is part of her routine in her tour – DeGeneres said that she does not intend to return to do any Hollywood or even Broadway project once she steps out of the limelight.
She also touched on several issues in her tour, including her infamous supposed bad temper, which led to the cancellation of her eponymous daytime TV talk show two years ago. The comedian, whose show quickly became a hit both on TV and online for her lighthearted banter – and sometimes good-natured pranks – with her guests, was apparently a completely different person behind the camera. An investigative report that came out in 2020 accused DeGeneres of creating a toxic work environment where she repeatedly belittled, ridiculed, and abused employees who worked with and for her on the show.
The report, which was based on interviews with several current and former employees, said that DeGeneres’ “Be Kind” motto was a far cry from the events that transpired when cameras were not rolling. Sources for the report all refused to be identified and spoke only on the condition of anonymity, fearful of the reprisals and retributions, as well as accusations of being anti-LGBTQ. Some employees said that DeGeneres fired them for taking leaves of absences for attending to medical emergencies or family funerals, while others said that the comedian made fun of them publicly – with one black former employee said that she experienced racist comments during her year-and-a-half stint with the show’s production.
During her routine, DeGeneres denied the accusations, saying, “I am many things, but I am not mean.”
