(RepublicanDaily.org) – A presenter from the BBC has backtracked on a statement he made on social media indicating that the recent Supreme Court ruling that presidents had immunity from prosecution for official acts meant that President Joe Biden could have former president Donald Trump assassinated.
“If I was Biden I’d hurry up and have Trump murdered on the basis that he is a threat to America’s security. #SCOTUS”, tweeted David Aaronovitch, a presenter for the British publicly-owned network. The 69-year-old Aaronovitch currently hosts on BBC’s Radio 4 show “The Briefing Room” and in 2001 was awarded with the Orwell Prize for political journalism.
The tweet has since been deleted, but not before others had managed to save screenshots of his statement.
Aaronovitch has attempted to defend his behavior by calling the tweet a supposed obvious attempt at “satire.” He bemoaned that since posting the comment, he is being piled on by members of the far right who claim that he is attempting to incite violence against former president Trump.
His sentiments seemingly echo similar comments written by Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor, who authored the dissenting opinion on the high court’s presumptive immunity ruling, which was voted on along party lines. In her dissenting opinion, Justice Sotomayor said that the ruling created a precedent that future chief executives could act with impunity – including having a political rival killed – as long as they justify their actions as necessary in the fulfilment of their duties.
“It’s plainly a satire,” Aaronovitch said of his now-deleted tweet. “So I’m deleting it,” he reasoned.
The Radio 4 host also attempted to divert the conversation away from his earlier statements, and has remarked on the supposed “rather extraordinary sub-culture” that might even “an anthropologist might find… interesting” – a culture that is comprised of people who have been criticizing and attacking him on Twitter / X.
However, the comment is right in line with Aaronovitch’s penchant for making incendiary comments – he had previously stated before that as older British people start dying off, it would eventually lead to the reversal of Brexit.
