(RepublicanDaily.org) – Democratic New York Representative and “Squad” member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has vowed to take steps to slap an impeachment complaint against the Supreme Court, following its controversial ruling that gave former president Donald Trump – as well as other U.S. presidents – immunity from prosecution for “official acts” performed while in office.
The Supreme Court decision also indicated that Trump, nor any other president, could claim immunity for their “personal acts.” However, the decision is bound to have repercussions in the lawsuits the former chief executive is facing, especially the case related to the January 6, 2021 riots in the Capitol, which prosecutors say was part of efforts by Trump to overturn the results of the election.
Posting on Twitter / X, Representative Ocasio-Cortez, who is also a member of the House Oversight Committee, said that the Supreme Court decision is an “assault on American democracy”.
“I intend on filing articles of impeachment upon our return,” she said.
The New York representative, who is one of the most liberal and left-wing members of Congress, did not specify any other details, such as specific judges she is looking to have removed from the country’s highest court.
The Supreme Court has been at odds with a segment – many from the left – of the legislature for some time. Some lawmakers have raised concerns over supposed ethics violations by some of the Supreme Court justices, particularly Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito, whom critics among the Democrats say received lavish gifts from wealthy Republican donors in the form of lavish trips and travel perks worth millions of dollars.
There is little chance that the measure would pass voting in the House, however, where the Republican party still holds sway – albeit by a slim majority. Democrats, despite a number disagreeing with the decision of the Supreme Court, are also not united in the sentiment that impeachment against one or more justices from the country’s highest court should be impeached.
The last time – and only time – a Supreme Court justice faced impeachment was 220 years ago, in 1804.
