(RepublicanDaily.org) – More than 100 workers are set to lose their means of livelihood after iconic American company Tupperware said that it will be shuttering its lone factory in the U.S. and will be moving operations there to Mexico. The company already has a facility in Lerma, Mexico, where the majority of its products for the U.S. and Canada markets are being made. The South Carolina facility was sold in 2023.
In a WARN Notice (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) issued last week, the plastic container company said that its factory in Hemingway, South Carolina, will be permanently closed, with 148 people to be laid off as a result. The layoffs will begin as early as September, and if everything is on schedule, the plant will complete its shutdown on January 14 next year.
In a statement, the company said that the decision to shutter the South Carolina plant was not a result of poor performance of the team working there. “We appreciate each of our valued team members,” Tupperware said, adding that it is thankful for the years of service the employees dedicated to the company.
Tupperware also said that employees who stand to lose their jobs will be given severance packages and early retirement. The company will also provide assistance securing other employment going forward in an upcoming job fair.
The Orlando, Florida-based company, established in 1956, was a staple in many households around the world for many years, but has been struggling in more recent years. Among Tupperware’s challenges now include the restructuring of its debt, the strengthening of its balance sheet, and improving its profits. A filing the company submitted to the SEC in 2023 indicates that it has “concluded that there is substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern for at least one year” from the filing of its financial statements to the agency.
