(RepublicanDaily.org) – Conservative political pundit Steve Bannon, a close ally and adviser of former president Donald Trump, is set to serve out a four-month jail sentence after a federal judge ordered him to report to prison by July 1.
In July 2022, Bannon was convicted of two misdemeanor counts of contempt of Congress, over his defiance of a House select committee subpoena related to Congress’ investigation of the January 6, 2021 riots in the Capitol. Bannon’s fate follows that of Peter Navarro, who used to serve as trade adviser for the former president, who is currently serving out his own four-month jail sentence for the same defiance of a congressional subpoena.
Bannon has been unfazed by impending prison sentence, and has framed his circumstances as an act of patriotism.
“There’s no downside… it’s not like it’s going to cramp my social agenda,” Bannon said of his impending imprisonment in an interview. He referred to his impending jail time as “not a bad book end.”
Bannon’s legal team will be appealing his sentence to a full bench of the D.C. Circuit court and even the Supreme Court, if it comes to it. His appeals may not be finished in time to delay his prison deadline, however.
The greater impact of Bannon being temporarily taken out of the public eye, however, will be the loss of an important and strong political voice in the camp of former president Donald Trump. Bannon, who leads a weekly and immensely popular far-right podcast called “The War Room” will be forced to secure guest hosts for his show. Trump will be deprived of one of his most ardent and most-followed supporters, as Bannon’s stint in prison will put him out of commission just until before polls open in November. The conservative commentator also previously faced federal fraud charges, but Trump pardoned him in the last the day of his presidency.
