(RepublicanDaily.org) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for several thousand cases of Fiji Natural Artesian Water bottles that are being sold online.
Firm testing by the agency found traces of manganese in the water, as well as “three bacterial genera.” The recall covers roughly 79,000 cases of the product, or 1.9 million bottles. The recall was first issued in March this year by Natural Waters of Viti Limited, but was only announced recently. The products were sold primarily on Amazon from the beginning of February to early March.
The production dates for the bottles that need to be sent back are the 11th, 12th, 13th, 24th, and 25th of November last year. The cases will have the UPC code of 6 32565 00004 3, while individual bottles will have 6 32565 00001 2 as their UPC code.
The company behind the product posted addressed the issue in a statement it posted on Twitter / X in March, saying that it was notified of the problem when some customers complained of discoloration of the water. The company also stressed that “FIJI Water remains safe to buy and consume” and that the Amazon notification on concerns surrounding their product was “overstated” and “does not accurately reflect the issue.”
The company also said that “99%” of its stock sold through Amazon has been “reclaimed” and asserted that there are no health concerns or risks associated with the manganese and the bacteria found in the water it sells.
The FDA recently downgraded the recall to a Class III recall, which the agency defines as a “situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.” In contrast, the stronger and more urgent Class I recall refers to defective products that have the possibility of causing “serious adverse health consequences or death” if used or consumed.
