(RepublicanDaily.org) – Former president Donald Trump is on a roll in the polls recently, with a recent survey showing him leading President Joe Biden among Catholic voters by more than 10 points.
The change is prompted in a shift among Hispanic voters, many of whom have switched support from Democrat to Republican over issues such as illegal immigration and a push by the former for extremely progressive policies.
The survey, released by the Pew Research Center, has Trump enjoying 55% support from Catholics, as opposed to Biden’s 43%. In contrast, Trump only had a 1% lead over Biden within the same segment in 2020. The shift among Hispanic Catholics is much more pronounced, with Biden eliciting a 67% support to Trump’s 14.7% in 2020 – today, the discrepancy is much narrower, with the president’s support in the same segment sinking to 49%, while his predecessor’s support rose to 47%.
According to Pew, it estimates that Hispanic Catholics will make up 14.7% of voters in the upcoming presidential election.
Trump also trounced Biden among white Catholics. The former president is currently favored by 61% of the segment, as opposed to the incumbent’s 38% support. In comparison, the Trump and Biden had support percentages of 57% and 42%, respectively, in 2020.
Overall, the new research report by Pew has Trump leading Biden by 1%, again promising that the presidential contest later this year will likely be even more heated than the last time the two men clashed over who would take the White House.
In addition, data among Catholics support other polls that show that both candidates are deeply unpopular among voters. Pew data shows that 64% of Catholics have an unfavorable view of him, while 57% of Catholic voters have an unfavorable view of Trump. Among the general electorate, 55.9% of voters dislike Biden while 53.2% voters have an unfavorable view of Trump, according to data from poll aggregator FiveThirtyEight.
