(RepublicanDaily.org) – The latest in the saga of the migrant and border crisis in the U.S. has seen the release of an migrant from Afghanistan on the FBI’s national terrorist watchlist into the country.
In fact, reports indicate that immigration authorities – including an immigration judge – already had 48-year-old Mohammad Kharwin in custody but allowed for his release after being told that he was not a threat to national security. Kharwin was released on bond and was given no restrictions on where he can go.
His immigration hearing is set for 2025.
However, Kharwin was first apprehended in March last year in San Ysidro, Calif., after being caught illegally crossing the border. He was released from custody under the “Alternatives to Detention” initiative of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Under the program, detainees are released into the population and instead of being detained, are required to periodically report their whereabouts to an ICE officer through GPS tracking on a smartphone app.
According to authorities, Kharwin was initially suspected to be on the U.S.’ terrorist watchlist, as a piece of information about him matched that of an individual on the list. However, the agents released Kharwin after being unable to get any corroborating information. Officials have refused to elaborate on what the information in question was.
Kharwin, who was also allowed to apply for asylum as well as a permit to work in the U.S., is reportedly a member of Hezb-e-Islami, or HIG, according to the FBI terrorist database. The HIB has been designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government, and is considered to espouse “virulently anti-Western” principles. The group supposedly operates out of parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan and has also reportedly attacked U.S. troops in the past and is responsible for the deaths of U.S. soldiers and American contractors.
