(RepublicanDaily.org) – Tammy Murphy, the first lady of New Jersey and wife of New Jersey’s current governor, Phil Murphy, has pulled a surprise exit from her campaign to replace Senator Bob Menendez, who is facing federal indictments on corruption charges.
In a video announcement posted on Twitter / X, the New Jersey first lady said that she came to the decision to back out of the race “after many busy, invigorating and… challenging months.” She also said that her Democratic primary campaign, which would have been against New Jersey Democratic Representative Andy Kim, would result in a drawn-out and negative battle that Murphy said she was “not willing to do.”
Murphy added that the presence of presumptive Republican presidential nominee, former president Donald Trump, on the ballot in November, meant that there was “so much at stake for our nation.” Given that, Murphy said, she was not willing to “waste resources tearing down a fellow Democrat.”
Murphy’s exit from the Democratic primary for one of New Jersey’s seats in the Senate makes Kim the presumptive nominee for Menendez’s current position. The embattled Democratic senator, who has denied all the allegations against him, said that he will not be running for re-election. However, Menendez said that he is confident that his name will eventually be cleared, and added that he could attempt to run to retain his position – but as an Independent – once that happens.
In a statement, Kim, who already traded barbs with Murphy when the two were still contending for the Democratic senate nomination, said that he now looks forward to working with the New Jersey first lady. Kim called Murphy “a voice for progress and public service” in the Garden State. Kim added that they both agree that “unity is vital” to keep the Senate in the liberals’ control, especially given the specter of another Donald Trump presidency.
