(RepublicanDaily.org) – The brother of a congressman from Michigan was killed after he figured in a domestic dispute that escalated into a violent encounter.
Fifty-seven-year-old Timothy Kildee, the brother of Democratic Michigan Representative Dan Kildee, was shot by his own son after an argument between the two.
The incident occurred in Timothy Kildee’s home in Vienna Township. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson told the press that Timothy’s son jumped out of a moving vehicle his mother (and Timothy’s ex-wife) and then entered his father’s home brandishing a firearm. The son, who has not been named, reportedly shot his father after demanding the latter hand over his wallet and keys. Another son, who was living in the house at the time, reported hearing a single gunshot.
The suspect then stole his father’s car but figured shortly after in a “high impact” collision with another vehicle. The elder Kildee’s wallet was also found on the suspect’s person. He sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment at a hospital, while authorities say that they expect the two other victims from the crash to recover.
The suspect, who is 27 years old, is currently in custody and has been arraigned from his hospital room. He faces several charges, which include felony murder, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury, carjacking, first-degree home invasion, two counts of armed robbery, interfering with electronic communications, six counts of felony firearm, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon. He was also charged with a misdemeanor of assault and battery.
Sheriff Swanson said that Representative Kildee has been informed of the situation. The Democratic congressman issued a statement on the incident, thanking all those who sent their support to his family, and asked that he and his family be given some private time to grieve.
Rep. Kildee is on his last term as a congressman, after announcing in November last year that he will not be returning to the House, citing “personal” reasons. He has been a member of Congress since 2013.
