(RepublicanDaily.org) – A former advisor of former president Donald Trump has been ordered to serve a four-month jail sentence for defying an order to appear at a congressional investigation on the January 6, 2021 riots at the Capitol.
Peter Navarro, who served as an economic adviser to the president during the Trump administration, was subpoenaed by Congress over his supposed role in an attempt to overturn Trump’s 2020 loss to President Joe Biden. He refused to comply, citing that all of his actions and interactions during the Trump presidency was covered by executive privilege. As a result, Navarro was found in contempt of Congress, and the Department of Justice charged him over the non-compliance. He was found guilty in September last year, and was sentenced in January.
The judge handling the case scored Navarro for playing the political victim card, saying that Navarro’s current state “are circumstances of your own making.”
Navarro was supposedly a key person in Trump’s alleged plan to overturn Biden’s victory in 2020. Navarro himself made no secret of the fact that he held an important role in a movement called the “Green Bay Sweep,” whose goal was the reinstallation of Trump as president. Navarro’s actions allegedly resulted in the January 6 riots at the Capitol.
Navarro’s lawyers have appealed the conviction, and have also asked that the court put his imprisonment on hold while the sentence under appeal. However, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, who oversaw Navarro’s case, declined to delay implementation of prison sentence. If jailed, Navarro would become the first Trump advisor to serve time over the alleged plot to keep Trump in the White House.
Another former White House adviser, Steve Bannon, was also found guilty of contempt and was also sentenced serve four months in prison, but a different judge allowed the sentence to be put on hold, while his legal team appeals the decision.
