(RepublicanDaily.org) – Former Democratic Texas Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson has passed away at the age of 88.
Her death was confirmed by her son, who posted the announcement regarding her passing on social media. News outlet The Dallas Morning News also reported the death, citing an unnamed source who was close to the Johnson family.
The longtime congresswoman, who served in the House of Representatives for close to three decades, began public service as a lawmaker for the State of Texas in 1972. Before that though, the Waco, Texas-born Johnson was a nurse, receiving her nursing certificate in 1955. She was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992. She retired from Congressional service when her term ended in 2022.
Johnson holds the distinction of being the first black woman from Dallas who was elected to state public office, as well as the first black and first woman to become the chair of Congress’ Science, Space and Technology committee. She was known for working to expand STEM opportunities for black and minority students as well as working for legislation to help fight climate change.
President Joe Biden issued a brief tribute and statement on Johnson’s death, calling her and “icon” and “mentor” to a whole new generation of public servants. She leaves behind a “legacy of resilience and purpose,” Biden’s statement read.
Vice President Kamala Harris said that it was a privilege for her to work with Johnson in the Congressional Black Caucus. Harris thanked Johnson for the latter’s “tireless work” that benefitted many, Harris included.
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson called Johnson “the single most effective legislator Dallas has ever had,” and praised the former representative for her dedication to work towards the benefit of the people and communities of Dallas as she deftly navigated Washington D.C.’ political waters.
