United States “Accelerates” Tank Delivery to Ukraine

(RepublicanDaily.org) – The United States prepares to “accelerate” its delivery of tanks to Ukraine to support the war effort of the Ukraine government against the Russian Federation’s incursion into the territory, CNN reported. This pledge comes as Republicans and Democrats debate whether U.S. support of the Ukraine war effort is in the best interests of the American people. While Democrats appear mostly united over the American support of the Ukraine war effort, Republicans appear divided over the issue, Voice of America reported on March 15.

Scrutiny followed comments by Florida Governor and potential 2024 presidential candidate Ron DeSantis over whether the U.S. should be directly involved in the Ukrainian effort to combat the Russian incursion. DeSantis’s comments received more criticism “than some treaties,” wrote National Review. Regardless of the debate on the political level, the U.S. will reportedly “dramatically” increase its deliveries of Abrams tanks to Ukraine.

The accelerated tank delivery followed a report to Congress on the transfer of aircraft to Ukraine that was issued by the Congressional Research Service on March 17, USNI reported. The report to CRS detailed a case for sending fighter jet craft to Ukraine to combat “Russian aggression” in the territory. The U.S. has recently debated sending Ukraine F-16 fighter jets, particularly following the downing of a U.S. manned drone over the Black Sea, Voice of America reported.

The U.S. has opted to send an older, refurbished model of tanks to the Ukraine front that can “ready faster,” Radio Free Europe reported. Initially, it was reported that the U.S. intended to send newer models.

The United States joined other Western countries in sending tanks and military support. On March 20, The Local, a Norwegian news site, reported that Norway had delivered tanks to Ukraine as well. Norway was among other Western powers to make this decision.

Tanks have been steadily contributed by other Western powers including Germany, Poland, Portugal, and Sweden. In late February, Germany, Poland, Portugal, and Sweden delivered Leopard tanks that numbered enough for “one mixed Ukrainian battalion,” Politico reported.
