(RepublicanDaily.org) – Congressional oversight leaders, known as the Gang of Eight, have obtained access to the contents of documents discovered at former President Donald Trump, former vice president Mike Pence, and incumbent President Joe Biden’s private residences, The Hill reported. The Justice Department had previously rejected the Gang of Eight Committee’s requests to review the documents, NBC reported.
The Gang of Eight is composed of leaders of both parties from both the Senate and the House of Representatives as well as ranking minority members of the Senate Committee and the House Committee for Intelligence. These eight members are briefed on classified intelligence documents by the executive branch. As intelligence members, the 2023 Gang of Eight were given access to the contents of the uncovered documents at former executive branch officials’ private residences. The disclosure came “two months” after the members had demanded immediate access to the findings, CBS News reported.
The documents were uncovered in a series of investigations. Special counsel Jack Smith continues to investigate documents that former President Donald Trump brought to his Mar-A-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. The documents were uncovered during an FBI raid of the premises. Agents reportedly took 33 items containing “roughly 11,000 documents,” of which approximately 100 were marked classified, the Justice Department confirmed.
The other documents included those found at incumbent president Biden’s home in late November 2022. The documents discovered at Biden’s residences triggered concerns for the national security interest when the documents were discovered at the Penn Biden Center, a Biden think tank that has received donations from Chinese nationals. This concern came amid rising bipartisan concerns over United States relations with the Chinese Communist Regime. The Biden document stash “may have jeopardized” national security, New York Post reported.
Biden received bipartisan criticism for these potential risks. California Democrat Representative Adam Schiff told ABC News on January 15 that the Biden documents needed to be reviewed for national security risks.
