(RepublicanDaily.org) – Democrats may generally seem to be on the same page when it comes to issues like immigration and troubles surrounding the U.S. border with Mexico, but a recent move by a Texas county attorney shows that behind the scenes, not all is what it seems.
Calling the issue at the U.S. border with Mexico an “unprecedented crisis,” Kleberg County Attorney Kira Talip Sanchez has left the Democratic party for the GOP.
Sanchez said that the Republican Party’s “policies of law and order protecting safety”, as well as “backing the blue” were more aligned with her own personal values and that of those living in Kleberg County. She made the public announcement at an event organized by Republican PAC Hispanic Republicans of Texas as well as released statements to news outlets.
The county attorney has held office since 2014, and is in charge of the Specialized Crimes and Narcotics Task Force. The volume of both migrants and illegal drugs attempting to get into the United States has risen significantly over the years, with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reporting that in July alone, there were as much as 183,503 migrant encounters at the southern border, significantly up from the already staggering 144,566 encounters seen in June. Law enforcement agents in Texas have also reported that since 2021 they have seized more than 426 million lethal doses of fentanyl.
Speaking to “Fox and Friends,” Sanchez defended her decision, saying that despite initial fears that she would be called a “traitor,” she feels “very comfortable” with the party switch and that she is “at home” and the GOP is where she belongs, especially given that she feels that her former party has “moved further left” in recent years. She also believes that many Hispanics, a lot of whom were raised with conservative values, are actually more Republican than Democrat “and they don’t even know it.”
For its part, the Hispanic Republicans of Texas welcomed the decision, saying that they would continue their work to bring more voters in the state to the Republican party. While Kleberg County has generally voted Democrat, residents voted for former President George W. Bush in the 2000 and 2004 elections, and in 2020 also narrowly voted for former president Donald Trump.
