Supreme Court to Finally Hear Abortion Ban Arguments

(RepublicanDaily.org) – The US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) has many contentious social issues to face this term, including gun control, capital punishment, and state secrets. But, perhaps the most controversial of all is abortion. The seminal reproductive rights case of Roe v. Wade is under legal scrutiny in a case before SCOTUS this week; if the court decides to overturn it, the rules around access to abortion in the United States could change dramatically.

On Tuesday, November 30, the nation’s highest court heard arguments relating to a Mississippi law seeking to ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Under the precedent set by Roe v. Wade, states are not allowed to stop women from seeking abortions before they reach the point of fetal viability, which occurs around 24 weeks.

Until recently, it seemed unlikely the SCOTUS would change the goalposts around abortion. However, since Amy Coney Barrett replaced the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 2020, there is an apparent pro-life majority on the bench. In addition, earlier this year, the court upheld a controversial Texas law effectively banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

Conservative figures, such as Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), have welcomed the possibility that Roe v. Wade might soon be a relic of history.

It all hangs in the balance as the Supreme Court deliberates on this pivotal case.
