State Assemblyman Takes Action Against Andrew Cuomo

( – New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D), whose COVID-19 response was initially praised by mainstream media outlets, has come under heavy fire in recent weeks. Allegations have emerged that some of his Health Department’s reporting practices in relation to the virus have been misleading — and possibly even fraudulent.

Now, his position could be at risk. On Tuesday, February 16, a petition to have him impeached reached 18,000 signatures. Assemblyman Kieran Lalor (R) launched the petition in response to leaked audio of Cuomo’s top aide apparently discussing the withholding of information about COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes.

Discussing the movement with the DCNF, Lalor shared his view that Cuomo’s handling of the pandemic has been worse than anyone realizes. He pointed to issues with unemployment benefits and the failure to provide prison officers with PPE at the outset of the public health crisis.

A simple majority in the New York State Assembly could vote to impeach Cuomo, requiring him to stand trial in front of the Senate. In this scenario, he would have to hand executive power over to his lieutenant governor pending the outcome of the hearing.
