Republicans Fight for the Protection of Immigration Health Restrictions

( – So far, Joe Biden’s presidency has been defined by his opposition to the policies of his predecessor. The flurry of executive actions he has taken since assuming office has largely aimed to undo former President Donald Trump-era policies.

Biden’s Immigration Reform

This has been most evident in terms of immigration reform. Biden has introduced a number of measures that serve to liberalize border control and make it easier for undocumented migrants to remain in the US. One order sought to introduce a 100-day moratorium on deportations of certain types of illegal immigrants; however, a district judge recently banned it.

What Is Title 42?

In March of last year, the Trump administration introduced a measure known as Title 42 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It allows law enforcement officers to expel migrants quickly at border facilities to prevent them from increasing the risk of viral spread within the US. Now, some Conservatives are concerned Biden may reverse it.

On Wednesday, February 24, 26 House Republicans wrote a letter to President Biden imploring him not to repeal or change Title 42. They claim the restrictions are vital to maintain order and protect public health; without them, the job of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials would become impossible.

The letter points out that CBP has turned approximately 200,000 individuals back at border crossing points in the Southwest over the past four months alone. It notes that stopping this stream of “undocumented, untested individuals” has “indisputably [slowed] the spread of COVID-19 in the US.”

What’s Likely to Happen?

The Biden administration has not made any statement on their intentions regarding Title 42. However, given their vehement opposition to Trump’s strict immigration policies, it’s not unreasonable to think they might move to undo it. There have also been calls from left-leaning advocates to repeal the measure.

The problem with Joe Biden’s immigration policies is that they prioritize noncitizens over Americans. With all the other problems facing our nation, perhaps he would be far better off focusing his attention elsewhere. We will bring you developments on this story as they emerge.
