National Guard Deployed in Response to Migrant Crisis

( – Apparently the migrant crisis isn’t just being felt by Republican states, as some blue states are now activating the National Guard to help deal with the influx of migrants in their respective territories.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy has tapped up to 250 members of the National Guard to help deal with migrant issues, as shelters in the state fill up with migrants at an alarming rate, posing a bevy of different issues that has overwhelmed local and state resources. There are an estimated 6,000 migrant families currently in Massachusetts’ shelters.

Healy, who is a Democrat, said that Massachusetts was in a “state of emergency” and but promised that the state would ensure that families would be provided with “access to safe shelter and basic services,” and called on the whole state to adopt an “all hands on deck” approach to deal with the crisis.

While the state looks to find more permanent manpower to deal with issues like logistics for services like food, transportation, medical and healthcare needs, and other basic needs, National Guard members will temporarily fill in the vacancies in understaffed and undermanned shelters.

Like New York, which recently saw Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticize the Biden administration for its supposedly poor response to the migrant crisis, the Massachusetts government is also asking the executive to use its powers to expedite work permits for a number of migrants so they can get back on their feet and become less dependent on government for their needs.

A few months ago, 14 Republican governors sent National Guard troops from their respective states to help with issues along the U.S.-Mexico border. The deployment has been met with several challenges and issues, the latest of which involve the shooting across the border by a member of the Texas National Guard, which wounded a Mexican citizen.

The firearm was discharged across the Rio Grande in El Paso, Texas, resulting in injuries to a 37-year old male from Ciudad Juarez. The soldier has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.
