“Merchant of Death” Is Working With Russia Now

(RepublicanDaily.org) – In late 2022, Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout was released from US prison in exchange for American basketball player Britney Griner. Griner was arrested last year at Moscow airport for carrying a cannabis vape in her baggage on a basketball tour to Russia, who agreed to let her go in exchange for Bout late last year.

Bout, known as the “Merchant of Death,” had been serving a 25-year term in jail for selling weapons to enemies of the United States including alleged attempts to ship powerful weaponry to anti-American guerillas in Colombia. He was convicted and jailed in 2012 on the US charges after being tricked into a sting operation in Thailand and extradited to the United States.

Biden’s release of Bout let him off the hook, and the “Merchant of Death” returned home with a clean slate. Bout was welcomed back to Russia with a positive media reception and enjoyed popular support across the country as somebody who had gotten the better of the Americans. He commented after his release regarding his strong support for Russian leader Vladimir Putin and the war against Ukraine, even saying he would “volunteer” to join Russian forces if eligible.

Bout is now doing something different than joining Russia’s military: he’s trying to join its government. News recently broke that Bout is running for city council in Russia’s central district of Ulyanovsk. Bout has put his name up for election with Russia’s LDPR, a strongly pro-Putin party that backs a nationalist and anti-American vision of Russia.

Bout has broad name recognition in Russia and close ties with the Putin government. He stands a real chance of winning and gaining a seat in Russian city council. The election for Krasnoyarsk City Council in Ulyanovsk will take place September 10. He has been described by American DEA agent Michael Braun as among the “most dangerous men” on the planet.
