Liz Cheney Issues Cryptic Message Quoting Trump

( – Over the last two years, Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) has emerged as one of the GOP’s strongest critics of former President Donald Trump. Now, she seems to be turning her fire on newly-elected House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). The same day McCarthy was elected, Cheney made an indirect attack on him using Trump as her weapon.

Although Cheney was one of Trump’s most consistent supporters throughout his presidency, voting with him over 90%, she turned against him after the 2020 election. Since then, she’s criticized him at every opportunity, and was one of just two nominal Republicans on the January 6 Committee that has been trying to prosecute the former president. She obviously isn’t happy at McCarthy, a Trump supporter, becoming speaker. Within hours of his winning the election at the 15th ballot early on January 7, she was on Twitter posting an obscure message trying to smear him.

Cheney posted a link to a CNN video about McCarthy’s victory, along with a December 2020 quote attributed to Trump — “Just say the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the Republican congressmen.” It doesn’t take long to work out what that means; Cheney is linking McCarthy to alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. It also smears his own legitimacy as speaker, because one of the things that finally persuaded enough Republican rebels to back him was a message from Trump, which Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) showed each of the anti-McCarthy holdouts.

After McCarthy’s eventual victory, he praised Trump in his acceptance speech, saying, “He was with me from the beginning” and thanking him for “helping get those final votes.” That clearly didn’t please Cheney, who’s tried to sabotage McCarthy’s career before. Last August, she told ABC he had been “completely unfaithful to the Constitution” and shouldn’t be the speaker. Now he is — and with Trump’s help. It looks like this is more than she can handle.
