(RepublicanDaily.org) – The developing crisis on our southern border is a multifaceted issue. Some have blamed its growth on President Joe Biden’s generally liberal approach to immigration, but there are certain policies in particular that have exacerbated the issue. One is the relaxation of asylum laws. Former President Donald Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, which allowed border officials to return migrants to Mexico, was abolished the day Biden took office.
On Wednesday, March 24, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced legislation that could help fix the problem. The Secure and Protect Act of 2021 would change the law so that asylum applicants from the Northern Triangle (El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras) and bordering countries would have to fill out their forms from outside the US.
The current situation at our southern border is beyond a crisis.
Today I’m introducing the Secure and Protect Act of 2021 to fix broken policies and stop abuse of our asylum laws.

The legislation would also raise the “credible fear standard.” That’s the initial screening requirement that aspiring immigrants must pass for their application to be considered. Making this more stringent would reduce the number of asylum seekers waiting in the US for a decision on their application.
Unless American lawmakers agree to take a tougher stance on the issue of migration, the problem on our southern border will likely keep getting worse. Senator Graham’s bill could be a step in the right direction.
