(RepublicanDaily.org) – Since 2017, the year the Islamic State had lost around 95% of its territory, we have heard relatively little about violent religious extremism. Unfortunately, it hasn’t gone away completely.
On Thursday, January 21, the Iraqi capital of Baghdad suffered its first suicide bomb event in three years. Two men detonated explosive vests in a crowded market area, killing at least 32 people and injuring over 100.
No group initially came forward to claim responsibility for the attack. However, officials believe it was the work of a sleeper organization with links to ISIS. The strength of ISIS has diminished considerably in the Middle East in the last few years, but there are still areas where the terrorist organization has influence.
This was a devious and devastating attack in a city working hard to repair itself after years of conflict and bloodshed. The fact that it happened just as Joe Biden took over as US president is alarming. We can only hope this is an isolated incident, rather than an ominous sign of things to come.
