GOP Mega-Donor Bankrolls RFK Jr.’s Campaign

(RepublicanDaily.org) – A major donor of former president Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign was revealed to have contributed a large infusion of funds to a Super Pac connected to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s bid to secure the Democratic presidential nomination.

According to recent finance reports filed by the Super Pac, American Values 2024, approximately half of its war chest – around $5 million – came from money donated by finance mogul Timothy Mellon. In a statement released to the press, Mellon described Kennedy Jr. as a candidate who had great potential to resolve the disunity in government due to “so much bipartisan support.”

In 2020, Mellon donated $20 million to Trump’s campaign through another Super Pac, called America First Action.

The Kennedy Jr. campaign is a relatively young one, with the candidate only announcing his intentions a few months ago. Many share Mellon’s sentiments that RFK Jr. could potentially work with both sides of the aisle and better work compromises with both parties, which have for years been at loggerheads on a number of key issues – at times with disastrous results.

A number of prominent and wealthy conservative personalities have expressed a desire to move away from hardline policies like those espoused by GOP presidential nominee hopeful Ron DeSantis or the erratic, impulsive, and inflammatory manners of former president Trump. Brian Darling, a former aide to Republican Senator Rand Paul and executive of conservative organization Heritage Foundation, said that it would be refreshing to have a candidate “who wasn’t trying to out-Maga Trump on economic issues” and intelligent enough to speak to and about, understand, and appreciate the benefits of American businesses and the free market instead of demonizing them.

While officially a Democrat, Kennedy Jr.’s stance on a number of subjects resonates with many conservatives – such as his skepticism of the pharmaceutical industry and the vaccine, and his distaste for the “draconian” policies enacted to curb the spread of the pandemic. The 81-year old Mellon has long been a strong supporter of conservative causes, contributing $53 million to an effort by Texas Governor Greg Abbot to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. He has also donated tens of millions of dollars to Super Pacs affiliated with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
