Gavin Newsom Recall Effort Finally Reaches Goal

( – California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has had a difficult year, to say the least. Once a hugely popular leader in his deep blue state, a string of gaffes and poor handling of the COVID-19 crisis have left him facing a recall election.

On Monday, April 26, the office of the California secretary of state confirmed the validity of around 1.62 million signatures on the recall petition against Newsom. As only around 1.5 million names are required to trigger a vote, his recall is almost a certainty at this point. However, it’s not yet certain when the election will be. Politico reported it will most likely take place in November.

On the day of the election, voters will have to make two choices: whether they favor recalling Newsom, and who they would like to replace him if he is recalled.

A number of candidates have already signaled their intention to run, including former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer (R). Also among the hopefuls is reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner, who announced her candidacy late last week.
