(RepublicanDaily.org) – The Walt Disney Company has filed a lawsuit against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida government oversight board after the Florida government motioned to seek legislation to “nullify” a development agreement between Disney and the developer of the district its theme park sits on, CNN reported.
The chairman of DeSantis’ appointed Central Tourism Board of Florida, Martin Garcia, was quoted by CNN as arguing the “legal mess” that Disney had created through its agreement, which invoked the royal lives’ clause, entering into an agreement that would continue until “21 years” after the last descendant of King Charles III of Britain has passed away, CNBC reported in March.
DeSantis responded to Disney’s lawsuit over the motion for its loss of self-governance, calling it a “political” stunt, NBC News reported. Disney’s lawsuit reportedly accuses DeSantis and his cabinet of staging government retaliation against the company.
Disney, however, argues that DeSantis’ decision has “violated” its constitutional rights, and has added economic hardships to its future in the Florida area, CNN reported.
The feud with Disney reportedly began when Disney executives were vocally critical of DeSantis’ “war on woke” legislation that banned the Florida education system from introducing curriculum on sexual orientation and gender identity. Critics have dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill a piece of legislation. In his campaign to revoke Disney’s self-governance, critics state that DeSantis is retaliating directly against comments made by Disney’s executives which dissented from the decision to remove the curriculum from Florida’s public schools.
Political analysts reason that DeSantis must continue his feud with Disney to save political face, due to “picking a fight” with a “bully.” However, DeSantis’ feud with Disney has caused Republicans to question him as a “conservative,” with possible Presidential 2024 candidate Chris Christie calling out DeSantis’ legislation against Disney as “not conservative.” In Christie’s view, a conservative would uphold the separation of government and business.
