(RepublicanDaily.org) – Monoclonal antibodies have been the source of much controversy in the discussion around the management of COVID-19. The laboratory-produced molecules can boost the immune system in response to the virus’ threat, and there’s evidence they’re highly effective in improving patient outcomes. However, the federal government has been reluctant to promote them in case they discourage the uptake of vaccines.
Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has been trying to make this type of treatment more readily available for residents of his state despite pushback from the Biden administration. Earlier this week, federal health regulators opted to revoke the emergency use authorization (EUA) for monoclonal antibody treatments produced by pharma companies Eli Lilly and Regeneron.
Officials cited data indicating the treatments are not as effective in fighting the Omicron variant compared to previous strains. This decision forced the cancellation of many patient appointments to receive monoclonal antibodies, including around 2,000 in Florida alone.
Ron DeSantis slammed this move, claiming it was an attempt by President Joe Biden to protect his preferred narrative that vaccination is the only way to defeat the pandemic. In a statement, DeSantis called Biden’s move an “indefensible edict,” and accused the president of acting without due regard for scientific evidence.
