Another Democrat Flirts With Idea of Defunding Police
(RepublicanDaily.org) – The “defund the police” slogan became popular among extreme left-wingers in the wake of the death of George Floyd in police custody in 2020. Though many mainstream Democrats have attempted to distance themselves from the movement, some still espouse it, including Democratic Senator Chris Murphy (CT).
When he appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” program on Sunday, November 27, the senator discussed the refusal of some local law enforcement agencies to enforce new federal gun control laws. He questioned whether “we want to continue to supply funding” to police forces that won’t comply.
Murphy has been the junior senator in Connecticut since 2013. Following the Sandy Hook school shooting in his state the previous year, he made implementing stricter gun laws one of his key priorities in Congress.
The senator’s suggestion regarding defunding police departments is starkly at odds with the position of major GOP figures on the issue. Since 2020, individuals like former President Donald Trump, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) have used it as a major talking point against Democrats.
Do you think Murphy’s suggestion was reasonable in light of the failure by some law enforcement agencies to implement laws, or does it simply amount to a radical Leftist position?
