(RepublicanDaily.org) – The push toward statehood for Washington, DC, is really gathering steam, at least on the political left. Introduced on April 1, H.R. 51 would establish the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth, as America’s 51st state. This name would honor Frederick Douglass, the famed abolitionist who lived in the area for the 17 years leading up to his death.
On Tuesday, April 20, President Joe Biden’s administration released a statement indicating it “strongly supports” the campaign to make Washington, DC, a state. The statement appeals to Congress to facilitate “a swift and orderly transition into statehood.” The House voted to pass this bill on Thursday, which will ensure the movement reaches the Senate.
The Administration strongly supports H.R. 51, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act, and calls for the Congress to provide for a swift and orderly transition to statehood for the people of Washington, D.C.

Democrats insist making DC a state is imperative if Washingtonians are to have proper democratic representation in Congress. However, GOP representatives have repeatedly sought to cast doubt on this narrative, claiming Democrats only want DC to become a state for political reasons. As Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has pointed out, the district is a heavily Democratic area, and its voters would almost certainly put two more Democrats in the Senate if they got the chance. Talk about ulterior motives.
