Biden Administration Stops Fining Illegal Immigrants in the US

( – Since his inauguration in January, one of President Joe Biden’s apparent priorities has been to make life easier for immigrants, whether legal or illegal. Despite the unprecedented challenges facing the American people, administration officials have facilitated immigration in a number of ways. Now, the administration has rescinded another sensible regulation.

On Friday, April 23, the Department of Homeland Security released a statement announcing the Biden administration is rescinding the fines for “noncitizens who fail to depart the US.” Any debts owed arising from these fines are also set to be forgiven.

Under former President Donald Trump, illegal immigrants who refused to leave the country were fined up to $500 for every day they stayed. Some individuals reportedly owed fines totaling as much as $500,000 while this policy was in force. The Biden administration claimed the fines didn’t work.

According to the statement, ICE officials actually stopped issuing fines on January 20, “[formalizing] the Biden Administration’s change in direction.” The recent announcement just formalizes the change and is one more example of the new president making it easier for migrants to stay in the country illegally.
